As Labor Day approaches, many people will be making the most of what’s remaining of summer vacation, heading to the beach or visiting nearby attractions to squeeze as much fun as possible out of these final days of summer. As traffic increases, it is important to remember your role in creating it – and to take steps in reducing the risk you pose to yourself and others while you are a part of it.
Rule #1: Avoid Distraction
Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of car accidents. Commit to avoiding distraction by turning your phone to silent (off is even better!), doing your personal grooming in a bathroom, and eating and drinking outside of the car. Keep your eyes and attention on the road, preprogram music selections or podcasts, and make sure that, while you are driving, the only thing you are doing is driving.
…And Intoxicants
Drunk driving accidents peak between May and September when Florida roads see the largest number of drivers. If you are going to drive, don’t drink. If you are going to drink, don’t drive. Call a rideshare, hail a cab, take the bus, or ask a sober friend for a ride home.
Know the Rules of the Road
When driving in traffic, be sure to follow the flow, including the speed of surrounding cars. Avoid speeding, tailgating, and other aggressive behaviors. Give a few cars length in distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you – more for trucks and motorcycles. In short, be courteous.
Obeying road signs, speed limits, and traffic signals helps to keep everyone on the road safe. Make sure you are following the rules and being respectful of your fellow motorists to help avoid poor decisions.
